What is IT?
Webster's Dictionary defines IT (Information Technology) as the technology involving the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and networks for the processing and distribution of data.
You will normally hear the term "IT" or "IT Department" when referring to a company's team that handles a business's computer systems. IT is much more than just a department at a business, however.
What is included in Information Technology?
The term "IT" covers a broad spectrum of technology. Typically an IT Department handles the entirety of a company's computers, systems, servers, network, wifi, applications, etc., and has the responsibility of ensuring they all work together to benefit the employees and the company as a whole.
IT Teams are typically in charge of handling 3 major areas of Technology:
- Deploying and Maintaining
- Monitoring and Optimizing
- Overseeing Security and Compliance
These areas of IT are typically broken into one of the following teams.
- ADMINISTRATION: The day-to-day tasks of IT are often handled or overseen my an IT Administrator or a team of IT Technicians.
- SUPPORT: Support and Help Desk Teams are vital for answering questions, gathering information, and providing troubleshooting steps toward a resolution to your problem.
- APPLICATIONS: For some programs to work together in a company there needs to be application patching, or integration made by the IT team. This can be applications such as E-Mail, Word Processing, and Communication Software for internal or external communication.
- COMPLIANCE: Many businesses are subject to rules and regulations that must be followed. These can be industry-specific, or government-mandated regulations that must be followed. These compliance regulations often require following strict rules and special settings put in place.
